Let’s Talk… First Day of Rehearsals!

Thursday 13th November 2025

Oh no it hasn’t… Oh yes it has! Rehearsals for Sleeping Beauty have started – check out some behind the scenes of our team at work.

Has it really been a year already…

It feels like only yesterday we were taking down the tree, packing away our twinkly lights, and saying goodbye to our lovely co-producers, Evolution. Time has a funny way of sneaking up on you though, as today we welcomed back the lovely Evolution team, alongside our cast and crew as we started the process of bringing this years production of Sleeping Beauty to life! There’s a special kind of magic in the air on the first day of pantomime rehearsals and today was no exception! Our Sleeping Beauty cast gathered for the very first time, and although some familiar faces returned, many were meeting each other for the first time. The room buzzed with excitement as introductions flew around over coffee and pastries (of course!), laughter broke the ice, and the creative energy began to build.

First things first, what does ever good panto have? Big costumes of course! Early Thursday morning, the costume department had a very special delivery of rails of sequin adorned leotards, glittering gowns, princely attire, and some truly outrageous outfits for our Dame! There is something about, as a performer, seeing your costumes for the first time that is like opening a present on Christmas day! There are no time for costumes right now though, we have a show to rehearse!

For some, the first rehearsal is always exciting. It is the time to get into what we at the theatre all love doing, creating! However, for some it can be a little daunting. It might be your first show, or a new place, new faces. That is where our creative team come in. We kicked things off with a warm welcome from the production team, sharing the vision for this year’s show and setting the tone for the weeks ahead. They have a magic power to settle the nerves of anyone, it really is a skill! Our production team are always on hand for our cast and crew to support them through the process. It’s always incredible to see how quickly a group of talented individuals transforms into a family, united by the shared goal of bringing joy to our audiences.

Let’s Talk…

TOP SECRET! Come on, you didn’t think we would spoil the surprise did you?

Next came the much-anticipated first readthrough of the script. This is where the story truly starts to come to life as the performers start to really develop their characters and see the story unfold as they interact with each other for the first time. It brings a lot of joy to the room, especially to our Theatre Manager who has been working on this years panto since last November!

There were plenty of laughs (and a few surprises!) as the cast explored their roles and began to shape the personalities that will light up the stage. One person we saw writing a lot of notes who you might not expect, was our Operations Manager, Carla. Carla looks after the audience areas for Towngate, making sure the bar, front of house, and merchandise is all ready to go before the show. Here’s what Carla had to say after the readthrough:

What is it like being in the readthrough?

I always enjoy sitting in the readthroughs for the pantomime as it brings back fond memories for me. Having come from a performance background, I still get the buzz like I am about to go on and perform myself!

What is your job within the theatre?

My job is to make sure that the theatre runs smoothly and efficiently day to day. I make sure that we are staffed correctly and that all staff are properly training, I look after the hires of our venue spaces and health and safety within the building, and my main priority is the customer experience; I want everyone to feel safe and welcome in the theatre, and enjoy their time from the moment they walk through the door. Oh, but my favourite job though is to find and test all of the merchandise for the pantomime each year. My desk is covered in flashing swords and fairy wands at the moment and I love it!

You were taking a lot of notes during the readthrough. What is it you were looking for?

As the Operations Manager, the things I am looking for are very different to the creative team like the Director. I am looking for elements such as; moments when the cast come into the audience, any moments there might be audience participation, and the key moments that my front of house staff should know about such as any loud bangs or when they can let in latecomers.

Finally, the cast and the creatives rolled up their sleeves and got moving. The first blocking sessions began, mapping out how scenes will flow on stage. This could be two of the cast, five of the cast, or even the cast with other props and exciting special effects… that you are just going to have to wait and see! The cast also get a chance to work with our wonderful Musical Director as they get their first chance to try out their songs and belt out the finale! Sitting in the office next door, it was like being serenaded… much nicer than the singing of our regular staff for sure.

And then came the big dance numbers—our choreographer wasted no time getting the ensemble into formation. It’s early days, but the energy and enthusiasm in the room promise something spectacular. Seeing the talent from our ensemble gives you shivers as they perform. Speaking of ensemble, we can’t talk about first day of rehearsals without talking about our Young Ensemble! Made up of some of the most talented young people from around the borough and the surrounding areas, our young ensemble (after having spent the day at school!) come and join the cast in the late afternoon to join in the fun. As you can see from the photos, there is no easing into it, as we get straight down to it!

And that brings to an end the first day of rehearsals! It is a long day, but everyone leaves in good spirits excited about the weeks ahead. The first day of rehearsals can really set the mood for a show, and if today was anything to go by, Sleeping Beauty this year is set to be our best panto yet!

If you haven’t booked your tickets yet, there is still time to join us for Sleeping Beauty! For more information or to speak to a member of staff, drop the team an email at towngateboxoffice@basildon.gov.uk or call on 01268 205300. One of the team will be happy to assist.
